A community has been in Baltar, near Porto, since 1968. The sisters ran a higher school for about 500 children until it was given up following the revolution in Portugal. At that time the community chose to turn over the buildings as a social institution for mentally challenged children. The Emmaus School thus developed still operates today. Two sisters are employed in this school, one as a teach, the other as administrator. About 74 challenged children attend Emmaus and learn many good and helpful things for their lives.
