 On July 21, 1903, eight sisters began in Olinda, Pernambuco. The archabbot of the Brazilian Benedictine monks had requested them to help with the future missionary work among the Indians of the Amazon region.
The sisters first opened a school in Olinda that developed into the present day Academia Santa Gertrudes (St. Gertrude’s Academy). In 1932 Olinda became the seat of the northeastern priory to which 85 sisters and 10 stations belong today. (see also: Olinda)
On September 28, 1905, two sisters from Olinda made preparations for a new foundation in Sorocaba, San Paulo, to the south. Six more sisters followed in October. They laid the ground work for today’s Sorocaba Priory with 106 sisters and 11 stations. (see also: Sorocaba)
